Santonio Holmes > Plaxico Burress...

You know, I don't remember too many people saying Santonio doesn't like working hard. But according to this Trib report from yesterday, apparently someone did.

And so it seems, San Antonio feels he has something to prove. Because someone said he doesn't work hard? I don't know. Maybe it's because the team drafted Limas Swede Sweed in the 2nd round. Maybe it's because he averaged more yards per catch than Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Reggie Wayne, Torry Holt and Chad Johnson last season and no one even noticed. Or maybe someone shit in his cereal the day he gave this interview. Your guess is as good as mine.

One way or another, the man seems to be very vocal this offseason about his dedication. First, he more or less demanded to return punts. Which...you know...I mean, ok...maybe. We'll see if he can hang on to the ball long enough to return anything. But beyond that, now he's giving us the "see, I really do care" routine.

Frankly, I don't particularly care what his motivation is. I never doubted Santonio's work ethic for a second. I mean, after all, he did (according to the Trib) "lead the Steelers in receiving yards, yards per catch and touchdowns, AND recorded the team's only three 100-yard receiving games" in 2007. It'd be awfully tough for him to accomplish that while cutting routes short and making careless mistakes...you know, like spiking a live ball or something (hypothetically speaking, of course). So where's the lack of motivation?

Nevertheless, all this "hard work" has a purpose. Apparently, Santonio would like to make his first trip to Honolulu this coming February. I guess no one told him the Pro Bowl is a gigantic waste of time. Either way, I applaud his effort and I absolutely hope he accomplishes what he's set out to do. Go forth San Antonio, and dominate.

Any comments from the peanut gallery? Or are you all out to a permanent lunch this week?

PS - this headline is a blatant rip-off of Tecmo's patented > (greater than) method...sorry man, it was for a good cause.

I'm happy to see Santonio is working hard instead of beating up women or taking nude pictures of himself in the shower this offseason. A lot of people (media/fantasy gurus) are speculating that Santonio is going to have a break out year. I hope so, but I dont want to jinx him.

I think Santonio has matured enough to catch the ball on punt returns, but I think he will have competition for these kick return roles w/ Mwelde Moore and Rashard Mendenhall. Whoever wins the
spot(s) will be an upgrade from last year's returners. Hopefully the Steelers special teams can consistently gain good field position and create a shorter field for the offense.

Has there been any word if Harrison is going to play on ST? I think they have to be better than last year, and Moore, or Holmes would be a huge upgrade, I don't see them giving Mendenhall too many returns though.

Holmes has an incredible amount of talent and doesn't seem afraid of going over the middle. I think much of this can be attributed to Hines and his influence. Holmes should have a great year with Washington maturing and Sweed being out there instead of Ced Wilson. I am excited for the team this year, but wary of the schedule.

Santonio will catch punts with his dick.

Rip me off one more time Cotter. Turd burglar

domski ~ Contrary to what I wrote suggests, I actually really like the idea of Santonio returning punts. I think it's entirely possible that he was just too inexperienced the first time around. Worried too much about breaking a return every time and forgot the most important part - catching the god damn ball. Should be something fun to watch. Like the Hyundai going 0-60 in a solid 45 seconds.

marc ~ No idea 'bout Silverback. My guess would be at least in the beginning, yes. But then again, we have a healthy Timmons, as well as Bruce Davis. So we may not need him to, IF those guys can shine. You know, shine on you crazy diamonds...or something.

tec ~ You know what they say...imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. For what it's worth you can rip me off anytime. In fact, I encourage it. Maybe then OFTOT will finally make it's assent to critical mass. That or it'll give me an opportunity to call you an asshole. Either way, I'll be happy. Turn my rock band up.

Back when I lived in the 'burgh, I distinctly remember the Trib being a crappy newspaper. It's reaffirming to know some things don't change. I wonder how many other stories are in the paper about some random person calling out of work because of an occasional personal issue.

With regards to the other issue:

Santonio the receiver > Santonio the returner

He might "compete" for the job, but if Moore or Mendelhall are decent at it, there's no way in hell Tomlin would risk an injury to Holmes by letting him do returns. That would be the same level of absurdity as the "suggestions" to put Troy on special teams coverage last season.

Dude, for the record, I still love that handle.

And as for the returning punts issue - most likely it'll be Moore (at least in my opinion). BUT I think Santonio would probably be a lot better this time around than he was originally.

PS - we need to get you into Meeting People Is Easy...email my ass.

I thought Moore was signed to play returns? It certainly wouldn't hurt to have Santonio back there with him on KOs.

Aww, Cotter still loves my handle. I'll leave the obvious joke aside and just say that you sure do know how to make a (random) asshole feel special.

(If you actually knew me in person, you'd be amazed by how incredibly accurate the name actually is.)
