Speaking of Compensatory Draft Picks...and Stacking the Deck....

Does anyone realize how ridiculous New England should be (on paper) going into next season? Not only did they pretty much trump all in the offseason player moves department, securing Adalius Thomas, Donte Stallworth, Kelly Washington, Sammy Morris, and Wes Welker, but they are also the only team with TWO first round draft picks, and now they've been awarded FOUR more compensatory draft picks. FOUR. That's like 100 in dog years...er picks...you know what I mean.

This amounts to a hefty 12 total draft picks for the Pats on April 28, the most of any team. How much more do they need? I mean with all that talent they just brought in, coupled with the fact that they made it all the way to the AFC Championship game (which they almost won mind you) last season, the Patriots should be a lock for the Super Bowl next year...then again, just because somebody looks good on paper NOW, doesn't mean that things won't change in the 6 months or so between now and the season kickoff.

Oh yeah, and Baltimore got 4 compensatory picks too...good news for the Steelers...probably not. At least with our 2 compensatory picks we'll have 9 total picks...not too shabby.

I understand your point about the Pats and their seemingly endless FA moves, draft picks etc.

I look at it from another view. They are showing a little desperation I feel. The only real impact guy they signed was Adalius Thomas. The rest are nice (Welker, Stallworth)but nothing that is going to turn them into world beaters again. I think they need a complete overhaul of their LB'ers and Thomas will help.

If they ace this draft though, all bets are off. They are the best at finding talent that fits their scheme. Still, I think they are a little past their true glory days and there is no guarantee of another SB. I think we are seeing a changing of the guard in the NFL and I expect to see 3 or 4 teams break out and begin to show their mettle. One of the reasons, aside from the increased salary cap, that NE made all those FA moves was they were so weak at so many positions last year. Its a tribute to them that they almost won the AFCCG again. But I think the magic pixie dust is wearing off.

Or they could just be reloading the gun? LOL! Thats what makes the NFL so much fun. Its sheer unpredictability.

I hear ya man, but let's be honest. They probably only needed one receiver to look like a contender again next year. They got 3, at least in my assessment half-way decent, receivers. Plus, beefed up that defense with Thomas and will probably add to that in the upcoming draft (IE - what will they do with 12 draft picks when they just got all that offensive insurance? You guessed it, Defense...)

But you make a good point - they obviously realized they had some holes to fill. Desperation? I don't know if I'd go that far, but uneasy for sure.
