Just a quick post to honor one of the original members of the great and powerful Steel Curtain Defense - Ernie Holmes.
I just learned via KDKA's website that Holmes died last night in a car crash.
Never the least controversial Steeler, he is certainly deserving of reverence nonetheless...and as far as I'm concerned, 59 is far too young to exit this life.
Rest in peace Ernie.

God, this was painful. Ernie was a great player but more than that: You are absolutely right: 59 is too young - FAR too young if you ask me as my own father is turning 59 next month!
RIP, Ernie. We'll miss you badly and remember you fondly.
A SAD DAY IN FOOTBALL AS WE GET READY FOR CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY,ERNIE AND THE STEEL CURTAIN WILL ALWAYS BE #1.I'LL NEVER FORGET THAT ARROW IN HIS HEAD,I COULD SEE IT NOW. IM A CHIEFS FAN SINCE 1970 BUT I ALWAYS LIKED THE STEELERS AS THEY WOULD KNOCK OUT RAIDERS IF WE DIDN'T.
Anyone that played D-line in the 70's was inspired by Ernie Holmes.
He was UN-blockable straight on and always around the football.
I wish I had the chance to tell him how he was one of my personal idols and mostly unappreciated in his low charge blow-em up style! Love ya Ernie! Zeff
